E-Bike Operator Dies in Crash; Woman Arrested for DWI

Suffolk County police arrested a woman for driving while intoxicated after a crash killed an e-bike operator this morning in Melville. 

On October 25, Jennifer Kirkpatrick was driving a 2018 Subaru Forrester southbound on Bagatelle Road, when she allegedly attempted to make a left turn onto Eastbound Express Drive South. The vehicle allegedly struck Joseph Melendez, 28, of Wyandanch, who was traveling northbound on Bagatelle Road at 1:06 a.m. on a Fly Wing gas scooter.

The e-bike operator, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead. Kirkpatrick, 24, of Melville, was transported to Huntington Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.  

Kirkpatrick was charged with Driving While Intoxicated. She was held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on October 25.
