
A woman has been arrested for allegedly driving drunk with a two-year-old in the car, in violation of Leandra’s Law.
On April 11 at 7:22 p.m., Yajaira Castillo, 44, of 150 Wanser Avenue was observed operating a 2014 Honda CR-V with a two-year-old girl southbound in the northbound lanes on Nassau Expressway in a dangerous manner by multiple motorists. Subsequent to the investigation, Castillo was allegedly located on Wanser Avenue with slurred speech, watery eyes, an odor of alcohol emanating from her breath and to be unsteady on her feet, resulting in positive results on the Standardized Field Sobriety Test.
Castilo was placed under arrest without incident and the vehicle was impounded. The girl was released into the custody of a family member. No injuries were reported.
Police charged Castillo with Driving While Intoxicated, Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (Child under 16) Leandra’s Law and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. She will be arraigned on April 13 at First District Court in Hempstead.
