Suspect Was Allegedly Involved in Speed Contest with Two Other Drivers
Nassau County police officers arrested a Centereach man for an alleged assault that occurred in Bellmore.
On May 2 at 10:30 p.m., a Nassau County Police Highway Patrol officer observed a 2020 BMW changing lanes without signaling and passing vehicles west on Sunrise Highway at a high rate of speed while engaged in a speed contest with two other vehicles. The driver, Ghavin Mcarthur, allegedly disregarded a steady red traffic signal and struck a 2015 Kia traveling north on Newbridge Road.
After an investigation, police placed Mcarthur, 21, of 31 Vanburen Avenue, into police custody without incident. A 17-year-old male driver of the second vehicle, along with his 18-year-old passenger, were both transported by a Nassau County Ambulance to a nearby local hospital and treated for complaints of pain.
Police charged Mcarthur with two counts of third-degree assault, along with several violations of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. He was issued an Appearance ticket and will appear at First District Court in Hempstead on May 19.
