A Brooklyn man has been charged with allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol, then offering the arresting officers money to let him go.

On October 27 at 5:58 a.m., Highway Patrol Officers responded to the eastbound Long Island Expressway, in the vicinity of exit 38 in East Hills for an unrelated 911 call. While responding in a marked police vehicle, a Highway Patrol Bureau Officer was struck by a 2024 Black Audi. The operator initially attempted to flee in his vehicle and then proceeded to flee on foot.

The defendant, Chi Hung Leung, 50, of 24 Bay 26th Street, was located nearby by responding officers. An investigation found Leung to be intoxicated. The officer and the defendant were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation and treatment. During the course of the arrest, Leung offered numerous officers money in exchange for his release.

Police charged Leung with Driving While Intoxicated, Leaving the Scene of an Incident Resulting in Injury, two counts of Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle in the Third Degree and three counts of Bribery in the Second Degree. He was arraigned on October 28 at First District Court in Hempstead.
