I do not see the panic in New York State that the author is hoping for amongst Democrats (“Trump Strikes Fear Into New York Machine,” October 1, 2024). Just preparation.
We know that Suffolk County is Trumpy, so a strong showing at the Coliseum may be a measure of enthusiasm for Trump voters. But as much as he motivates his base, he motivates those who are against him. New York will be blue by double digits. But if your point is that New Yorkers are not homogenous, I would agree. Nor is any state in the Union. Politicians would serve better if they didn’t couch everything as a threat, e.g. “Haitians are eating your dogs.” Just state that an influx of legal immigrants on temporary protected status has put a strain on the local system, and that the local system needs assistance. Better to be honest.
But it seems like this publication echoes Trumpism, so you may not agree with me. Either way, let’s respect everyone’s right to express themselves so long as it is civil. We’re all Americans and we have more in common than we think.
