Year-Over-Year Crime Down 18%

U.S. News & World Report recently released its rankings of “The Top 25 Safest Communities in America,” naming Nassau County as the safest county in the nation. Nassau earned a perfect Public Safety Score of 100.
According to U.S. News, the violent crime rate in Nassau is 143.6 per 100,000, which is less than the national average (255.2 per 100,000).
In the public safety category of the rankings, communities are scored by U.S. News on a 100-point scale tied to their performance relative to one another across seven metrics in three key areas: crime, injuries and public safety capacity. Individual metrics include violent and property crime rates, the share of the population in proximity to emergency facilities, spending on health and emergency services, vehicle crash fatality rate and more.
It was also reported by the governor’s office that crime in the first half of this year declined 18%, compared to the first six months of last year.
“I am incredibly pleased that Nassau County has again been named by U.S. News and World Report as the safest county in America,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “This news, coupled with the double-digit reductions in crime we have seen in Nassau County this year, are a testament to the tremendous work of our law enforcement partners and the dedicated attorneys in the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office who are singularly focused on protecting our communities. Working together, we are getting dangerous weapons off our streets, reducing gun violence, and driving down overall crime in our neighborhoods to make people safer. I have devoted my entire career to the safety of this county and am proud to be a life-long Nassau resident. This is my home, and I will work every day on behalf of our residents to protect it.”
Governor Kathy Hochul recognized Nassau County for its work in fighting crime, as well as the statewide efforts in cracking down on criminal activity, which led to a 6% drop in crime across the Empire State.
“Public safety is my top priority and I’ve been laser-focused on fighting crime from the moment I took office,” Hochul said. “Our approach is working, as murders, shootings, violent crime and property crime have declined statewide. But make no mistake: our work is not over, and I’ll continue working to ensure our state is safer for all.”
