The Town of East Hampton completed a crucial beach recovery project at Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk. The announcement was made on June 28.
This phase of the project has recovered the portions of the beach lost to recent storms. Initiated to counteract severe damage caused by recent storms, the restoration efforts focused on
rebuilding the beach. The project commenced on June 17, 2024, with Southampton Excavation and Site Development, LLC, overseeing the placement of 5,800 cubic yards of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation-approved white sand. This phase was completed on June 26.
The second phase of this project is scheduled to begin this fall and will be engineered by Coastal Science & Engineering, Inc. They will recover the dune system to further shield the community from flooding and infrastructure damage. The Town of East Hampton has allocated $1.75 million from its capital budget for both phases of the project, with matching funds sought from Governor Kathy Hochul.
East Hampton Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez said, “Protecting our shoreline and the Ditch Plain neighborhood is paramount as we confront the challenges posed by climate change. This project exemplifies our commitment to safeguarding East Hampton’s natural resources and infrastructure. From Town departments working hand-in-hand to local stakeholders’ unwavering support, this achievement showcases what can be accomplished when a community comes together to protect our natural treasures.”
East Hampton Town Councilmember David Lys said, “The completion of this first phase ensures
that Ditch Plains Beach is ready for residents and visitors to enjoy this summer,” Town Councilmember David Lys added. “It’s a testament to the collaboration between our community and the Town, enabling us to minimize disruptions and protect our neighborhoods effectively.”
Throughout construction, safety measures including sand fences, signage, and monitoring by the East Hampton Town Marine Patrol were implemented to ensure public safety and environmental
compliance. Lifeguards will be stationed at Ditch Plains Beach seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
