A three-time convicted felon was found guilty after a jury trial — and could face a possible life sentence — of possessing a loaded handgun after the police executed a search warrant at a residence in Bay Shore.
On April 28, 2023, members of the Suffolk County Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence in Bay Shore. Upon entry, officers found Tremayne Winfield inside the home with a loaded 9-millimeter handgun with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds of ammunition.
On June 21, 2024, Winfield was found guilty after a jury trial heard before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins of one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C felony, and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both Class D felonies.
Winfield was previously convicted of multiple felony offenses in Suffolk County including second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C violent felony; second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both Class D felonies; and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.
Winfield, 39, of Amityville, is due back in court on July 19, 2024, and he faces up to life in prison.
“This defendant has a long history of crimes involving weapon possessions, with the instant conviction being his third felony conviction,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “My office will continue to vigorously prosecute violent offenses committed by prior felons to ensure our residents and communities are safe.”
