State Police Arrest 225 for DWI during Memorial Day Weekend

Nearly 11,000 Tickets Issued for Drunk Driving, Other Violations 

New York State Police arrested 225 people for driving while intoxicated on Memorial Day weekend and issued 10,949 tickets. The crackdown took place from May 24 to May 27. 

Troopers also investigated 239 crashes, including 58 involving injuries. No fatalities were reported. 

As part of the enforcement, troopers also targeted speeding and aggressive drivers across the state. Of the tickets issued 3,076 were for speeding, 356 for distracted driving, 1,663 for seatbelt violations and 106 were for violations of the Move Over Law. 

Last year, State Police issued 13,471 total tickets and arrested 219 people for DWI.

On Long Island, 651 tickets were issued, of which 171 were for speeding, and 24 people were arrested for DWI. Additionally, 38 drivers were ticketed for distracted driving. 19 for not wearing a seatbelt and six for violation of the Move Over Law. 

“The results of this year’s campaign show that too many people are still getting behind the wheel while intoxicated or impaired by drugs,” New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said.. “This behavior will not be tolerated, and our Troopers will remain vigilant in the removal of these reckless individuals from our roadways.” 

“New York State has zero tolerance for drunk and impaired driving, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent the senseless tragedies that result from it,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “Public safety is my number one priority, and we will continue to aggressively enforce our driving laws so that New Yorkers are protected.”
