Four Canoers Rescued after Going Overboard

Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau officers rescued four canoers in the Long Island Sound off Wading River Beach after their vessels flipped over.

Darwin Ortis, Adrian Zelaya, Walter Noriega and Gelyn Linairs were in two canoes on the Long Island Sound on May 21, when their canoes capsized and they went overboard into approximately 58-degree water.

At 7:23 p.m., Linairs called 911 and aviation section officers were able to locate the group and direct Marine Bureau officers to their location. Three of the four were wearing life vests and were able to safely be taken aboard Marine Delta, which was their first stop before they were transferred to the Sound Beach Fire Department.

All four transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead for treatment of hypothermia.
