One Pedestrian Killed, One Injured in Separate Incidents

One pedestrian was killed and another was injured in two separate motor vehicle crashes.

On May 4 at approximately 9:15 p.m., an unidentified woman was crossing Sunrise Highway from north to south, between New Highway and Court Street in Copiague when she was struck by a westbound 2019 Chevrolet Traverse, driven by Patrick Cooke, at approximately 9:15 p.m.

The woman was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip where she was pronounced dead. Cooke, 62, of Islip, was not injured. The Chevrolet was impounded for a safety check. Suffolk County First Squad detectives are still investigating the incident.

On May 5 at approximately 12:13 a.m., Amilar Velasquez was walking on the northbound shoulder in front of 32 West Hills Road in Dix Hills when he was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. Velasquez, 37, of Huntington Station, was transported to Huntington Hospital in critical condition. Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit detectives are still investigating.
