Man Arrested for DWI after Crash Seriously Injures Motorcyclist

Suffolk County police arrested a man for drunk driving following a crash that resulted in serious injuries to a female motorcyclist in Bay Shore.

On April 28 at approximately 8:20 .m., John Hernandez-Hernandez was driving a 2014 Chrysler 300 northbound on Fifth Avenue when he attempted to turn left onto Fairtown Road. His maneuver caused a southbound 2020 Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by Veronica Ortega, 32, of Central Islip, to collide with his vehicle.

Ortega was airlifted via Suffolk County Police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of her serious injuries.

Hernandez-Hernandez, 21, of 17 Fairtown Road, Bay Shore, was subsequently arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. He is currently held at the Third Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on April 29.

Both vehicles involved in the crash were impounded for safety checks. Detectives are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
