W. Babylon Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Trying to Kill His Wife

A West Babylon man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for attempting to kill his wife in front of his children.

On the morning of June 14, 2023, the victim, who expressed a desire to end the marriage, was sleeping in her daughter’s bedroom. The man, wielding a knife, forced his way into the room despite the victim’s refusal to talk with him in their bedroom. He stabbed her three times while threatening to kill both her and himself, and told her that she was ruining the family. The ordeal was witnessed by their two daughters, ages eleven and five. The eldest daughter pleaded with the defendant to stop and he told them to go to another room. (The Suffolk DA’s Office is not naming the victim or the defendant in order to protect the children’s identities.)

In a desperate attempt for help, the victim managed to leave the house and seek assistance from a neighbor, despite the defendant’s attempt to prevent her from calling 911 by taking her phone. When he realized she had left, the defendant pursued her, further assaulting the victim until the neighbor intervened by calling 911. The Suffolk County Police Department’s K9 unit apprehended the defendant shortly after.

Following a trial, the man was convicted on February 5, 2024, of one count of second-degree attempted murder and other related charges by Supreme Court Judge Timothy P. Mazzei. On March 11, 2024, the defendant was sentenced to 25 years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision.

“The trauma this defendant inflicted on his wife and children is unimaginable,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “We are satisfied with this sentence, but we also understand it won’t take away the damage this defendant has irreversibly inflicted on his family.”
