Manhattan Man Gets 20 Years to Life for Burglary

A Manhattan man was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for two burglaries that took place just seven days apart at a Uniondale boarding house in 2020.

Kevin Carroll, 41, was convicted after a jury trial before Judge Helene Gugerty on December 14, 2023, of first-degree burglary (a B violent felony); three counts of second-degree burglary (a C violent felony); and two counts of third-degree burglary (a D felony). He was acquitted of one count each of second-degree burglary and third-degree burglary, two counts of first-degree criminal contempt and three counts of second-degree criminal contempt.

The trial began on December 6, 2023, and the jury deliberated for approximately two days before delivering their verdict. Carroll is a mandatory persistent felony offender, and was sentenced on February 21, 2024 to 20 years to life in prison.

Carroll is a former resident of 429 Fenimore Avenue, a boarding house in Uniondale with shared and single-occupancy rooms. On June 22, 2020, at approximately 5:00 p.m., he forced open a rear door of the house and struck a victim, who had gone to investigate the disturbance, several times in the face and head. The victim ran outside to call 911 and saw Carroll fleeing with a gray electric bicycle that belonged to another resident of the house.

Seven days later, on June 29, 2020, at approximately 1:30 p.m., another victim heard a knock at the front door, opened the door and saw Carroll standing there. The victim attempted to hold the door closed, but Carroll pushed through and entered the house. He entered another room, walked out with a white electric bicycle, and fled the house.

Twenty-minutes later, police officers observed Carroll with the white bicycle approximately a quarter of a mile from the scene. He was arrested later that day by Nassau County police.

“The defendant once lived at the boarding house at 429 Fenimore Avenue and knew the layout, the people that lived there, and where they kept their valuables,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “Carroll broke into the house, attacked a victim, and stole an electric bicycle. Just seven days later, the defendant went back for more, forcing his way back into the address and stealing a second electrical bike. Kevin Carroll is a persistent felony offender with a lengthy criminal record. He will now potentially serve the rest of his life in prison and will no longer be a threat to the community.”
