By the Numbers: Escape from New York Redux

In 2022, approximately 545,500 New York State residents moved out and to more affordable regions in the U.S. The top four states of choice were Florida (91,201), New Jersey (75,103), Connecticut (50,670) and Pennsylvania (44,807).

Harder to Breathe

Mount Sinai South Nassau’s “Truth in Medicine” poll found that less than half of Long Islanders — 46% — are satisfied with the environmental health of where they live. Eighty-nine percent of respondents are worried about the safety of the air and 91% said they are concerned or very concerned about air pollution.

Biden Losing His Base

Fewer Black voters are supporting President Joe Biden since his election. According to the USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, only 63% of Blacks currently support Biden, down from 87% in 2020. Further, younger voters (those under 35) support Donald Trump, 37%-33%, and Hispanic voters give Trump a 39%-34% edge.

Hunger a Concern on Long Island

A report from the New York State Department of Health found that more than one in five Long Islanders worry about having enough money to buy nutritious meals. Further, 23.1% of Suffolk residents and 21.1.% of Nassau residents reported that they were food insecure. However, this is lower than the state, which has a food insecurity rate of approximately 25%.
