The Town of Brookhaven is kicking off the first phase of public engagement for its Comprehensive Land Use Plan update with a series of six open house events — one in each town council district. These workshops are designed to gather input from residents, business owners, and other stakeholders to help shape a vision for the town’s future.
The town has initiated an update to its Comprehensive Land Use Plan, which was adopted in 1996. Since then, Brookhaven has completed a number of focused studies examining the needs, growth, and character of its many communities. This planning effort brings those studies together into one coordinated framework that looks at both townwide conditions and priorities, as well as local needs within each of Brookhaven’s six council districts. It will address a wide range of topics, including land use, housing, transportation, sustainability and economic development.
Each open house offers residents an opportunity to learn about the Comprehensive Land Use Plan process, share ideas, and identify priorities for their communities’ futures. While residents are welcome to attend any of the six sessions, they are encouraged to participate in the event within their own community to review information tailored to their hamlet and Council district and provide input on local issues and opportunities.
Attendees may drop in at any time during the scheduled hours to explore materials, speak with project team members, and share feedback through interactive activities. No formal presentation will be given.
“This is an opportunity for everyone who lives, works, owns a business, or has a stake in Brookhaven’s future to make their voice heard,” said Supervisor Daniel Panico. “The more input we receive, the stronger and more reflective our Comprehensive Plan will be of the people, neighborhoods, and values that make our Town such a diverse and special place.”
The open house schedule is as follows:
- For Council District 1 residents, the open house will take place on May 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at New Village Recreation Center, located at 20 Wireless Road in Centereach.
- For Council District 2 residents, the open house will take place on April 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center, located at 739 Route 25A in Mount Sinai.

Residents who are unable to attend an open house can still participate online. A community survey and interactive map are available on the project website at planbrookhaven.com, where residents can share comments and sign up for email updates to stay informed throughout the planning process.
The survey asks participants to share their thoughts on topics such as housing and development; local business and economic opportunities; transportation and mobility; parks, recreation, and open space; waterfronts and environmental resources; infrastructure and public services; and quality of life and community identity.
The survey takes approximately ten minutes to complete and can be accessed by visiting planbrookhaven.com.
Public input gathered through the survey will help shape the vision and goals of the Comprehensive Plan, which will guide decision-making, investment, and growth across Brookhaven.
