Ronkonkoma Man Indicted for Wrong-Way DWI Crash on New Year’s Day

A Ronkonkoma man was indicted for allegedly driving nearly three times the legal limit and the wrong way on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day and crashing head-on into a 30-year-old male driver.

On January 1 at approximately 1:55 a.m., after leaving a New Year’s Eve party, Tasabbir Hossain, allegedly intoxicated, began driving his 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG westbound in the eastbound lanes of Sunrise Highway in Massapequa.

As he drove on the wrong side of the road, Hossain crashed head-on into a 30-year-old male victim’s 2015 Acura 4DSD traveling eastbound on Sunrise Highway near Louden Avenue. The victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital with serious physical injuries that required surgery, including a fractured arm, fractured knee, and fractured ankle.

The defendant was transported to Nassau University Medical Center from the scene for medical treatment. Blood drawn from the defendant at the hospital revealed that he had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.23% approximately thirty minutes after the crash.

Hossain, 32, was arrested by Nassau County Police Department Seventh Precinct officers on January 1. He was arraigned on March 17 before Judge Helene Gugerty on grand jury indictment charges of Aggravated Vehicular Assault (a Class C felony); Vehicular Assault in the First Degree (a Class D felony); Vehicular Assault in the Second Degree (a Class E felony); Assault in the Second Degree (a Class D violent felony); Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated Per Se, Driving While Intoxicated Per Se; Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Driving (all unclassified misdemeanors).

“This defendant was allegedly so intoxicated when he left a party after ringing in the new year that he drove into oncoming traffic on Sunrise Highway,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “His reckless choice to drink and drive created an incredibly dangerous situation for his fellow drivers, and ultimately, put an innocent 30-year-old man in the hospital … . That man suffered extensive injuries requiring multiple surgeries. He remains confined to a wheelchair, and it is unclear when he will regain the ability to walk.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty and bail was continued at $250,000 cash, $500,000 bond and $1.25 million partially secured bond. He is due back in court on April 20, 2026. If convicted, he faces up to seven to 15 years in prison.

There is no excuse for driving home drunk from a party. Plan ahead, call a cab, or travel with a designated driver. Make sure that you — and everyone on the road with you — makes it home alive.”
