Applications are now open for the Town of East Hampton Police Department’s 2026 Citizen Police Academy, an immersive and interactive program designed to give residents a behind-the-scenes look at modern policing. The Spring 2026 session will kick off on March 4.
The Citizen Police Academy is a 10-week, hands-on experience that offers participants a rare opportunity to learn directly from East Hampton Town Police Officers and specialized units. Through dynamic presentations, demonstrations, and practical exercises, participants will gain insight into how officers serve and protect the community each day.
Academy topics will include crime scene investigations, special victims cases, laws of arrest, use of force, domestic violence and hate crimes, DWI investigations and traffic stops, and the Department’s Unmanned Aerial Systems (drone) Unit. Participants will also learn about the Emergency Services Team and Dive Team, take part in virtual firearms training, tour police facilities, and experience a ride-along with a Police Officer.
Additional highlights include an evening at the Suffolk County Police Department Firearms Training Section and the opportunity to participate in the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC).
The goal of the Citizen Police Academy is to foster transparency, trust, and understanding by providing residents with an “insider’s view” of law enforcement operations and decision-making.
This free, ten-session program will meet one evening per week from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., running from March 4 through May 13.
“We encourage residents to join us for this unique experience designed for East Hampton Town community members to gain greater insight into law enforcement and a working knowledge of the values and operations of the East Hampton Town Police Department,” said Town Supervisor Kathee Burke-Gonzalez.
Participation is limited to Town of East Hampton residents who are 17 years of age or older and possess a valid driver’s license. All applicants will be subject to a background check. The application deadline is February 25.
Residents interested in learning how their police department operates from the inside are strongly encouraged to apply early, as space is limited. For more information, click here or call (631) 537-7575, extension 218.
