To the Editor:
In Minneapolis, we have witnessed a series of horrific, avoidable tragedies during the last two weeks that have brought Nassau County and our nation to a critical inflection point.
My heart is broken for the families of Renee Good and Alex Pretti — both of whom were senselessly murdered by federal agents during ICE’s ongoing siege. My prayers and support are with the people of Minneapolis as they continue to exercise their constitutional rights to call attention — peacefully and loudly — to these indefensible atrocities.
Minneapolis is a frightening case study of the inherent danger that occurs when local law enforcement professionals are undermined and supplanted by a poorly trained, armed militia that operates with virtual impunity and no oversight.
As a representative of communities that continue to be terrorized by indiscriminate, sweeping ICE raids, I am outraged by what has occurred here and across our nation; horrified by the racial profiling that continues to drive these actions; and disgusted by the Trump administration’s use of our society’s most vulnerable people as political punching bags.
As a public servant who took an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States, I will always stand for due process, accountability, and the inherent human dignity each of us possesses as a creation of God. Each of us must use our voice to demand a return to decency and respect for the rule of law.
