Man Arrested for Alleged Violation of Leandra’s Law

Suffolk County Police arrested a man for driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle after he allegedly fled the scene of a motor vehicle crash in Huntington Station. 

Multiple 911 callers reported a hit-and-run crash where a 2013 Toyota Prius crashed into an unoccupied 2018 Mazda sedan that was parked at Ackerman Place and Woodbury Road on January 21 at 8:40 p.m. When police arrived, they found the legally parked Mazda with damage to the rear driver’s side of the vehicle and a piece of the Toyota’s bumper. 

Second Precinct patrol units canvassed the area and located the Toyota, which was abandoned in the middle of the roadway, parked across the double yellow line, at the intersection of Soundview Road and Hollywood Place.  

The driver of the Toyota, Matthew Mezeul, who had his 4-year-old son in the car with him, was located by police a short time later as he returned to his home in Huntington.  

Mezeul, 37, was charged with Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a Child Passenger Less than 15 Years Old, Driving While Intoxicated, and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. He is scheduled to be arraigned on January 22 at First District Court in Central Islip.  

His son, who was not injured, was released to a family member.
