A Queens woman was arrested for kidnapping and child endangerment after she allegedly ran off with her child during a supervised visit.
On January 17 at 1:16 p.m., Charlene Smith, 41, of Fresh Meadows, was having a supervised visit with her 7-year-old child at Barnes and Noble, located at 91 Old Country Road in Carle Place, when she allegedly exited the premises and fled the scene with the child in an unknown direction.
After an extensive investigation, the Nassau County Police Aviation Unit Helicopter 4 located the defendant and the victim in the parking lot of the Roosevelt Field Mall and directed patrol units to the location. Smith was placed into custody without incident. The victim was also transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. No injuries were reported.
Police charged Smith with Kidnapping in the Second Degree, Criminal Contempt in the Second Degree, Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Custodial Interference. She is scheduled to be arraigned on January 18 at First District Court in Hempstead.
