Brooklyn Man Arrested after Allegedly Altering Check

A Brooklyn man was arrested for grand larceny and identity theft after cashing a check in which he allegedly changed the dollar amount.

According to Nassau County Fourth Squad detectives, an unknown male was present at Young Israel of Woodmere when he received a check in the amount of $500. The subject allegedly subsequently altered the check to the amount of $5,000 and cashed it. The defendant, Israel Amar, 36, of 1158 42nd Street, returned to the synagogue on January 8, where he was arrested without incident.

Police charged Amar with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree and Identity Theft in the First Degree. He was arraigned on January 9 at First District Court in Hempstead.
