Freeport Man Arrested for Allegedly Driving under the Influence of Drugs

A Freeport man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, striking a pedestrian and a mail truck.

On October 10 at 10:40 a.m., Nassau County officers responded to an auto accident on Merrick Road in the vicinity of Merrick Avenue. Upon arrival, it was determined that Jeffrey Butt, 45, of 55 Hampton Place, was operating a 2025 black Chevrolet eastbound on Merrick Road when he allegedly struck a 50-year-old male victim, as well as a parked United States Postal Service vehicle.

The victim suffered serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. Butt was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation indicated that Butt was allegedly operating his vehicle while impaired by drugs. He was placed under arrest without incident. Butt was also allegedly found to be in possession of a substance believed to be cocaine and pills believed to be oxycodone.

Police charged Butt with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Assault in the Second Degree, Vehicular Assault in the Second Degree, Reckless Driving, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fifth Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree. He is scheduled to be arraigned on October 11 at First District Court in Hempstead.
