First Extradition from India to the United States Since 2017
An Indian citizen was extradited to Nassau County to face indictment charges for a high-speed crash on Old Country Road in Hicksville in April 2005 that killed a 44-year-old father and husband.
On April 11, 2005, at approximately 6:00 a.m., Ganesh Shenoy allegedly drove through a steady red light at the intersection of Levittown Parkway and Old Country Road in Hicksville at a high rate of speed and crashed into a Cadillac driven by 44-year-old Philip Mastropolo, who was heading to work. It is estimated that Shenoy was allegedly driving twice the speed limit at the time of the crash.

The force of the crash demolished the victim’s vehicle and sent the car skidding 65 feet into the front of a Freightliner box truck that was stopped at the red light on the other side of the intersection.
Mastropolo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shenoy was taken to an area hospital for treatment, but refused medical attention and left the hospital.
Fourteen days after the crash on April 25, 2005, despite having his New York State driver’s license and Indian passport seized by police, Shenoy boarded a plane at John F. Kennedy International Airport headed to Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India. He never returned to the United States.
An indictment was returned on August 8, 2005, charging Shenoy with second-degree manslaughter and both an arrest warrant and Interpol Red Notice were subsequently issued. He was taken into custody by members of the United States Marshals Service and extradited back to the United States on September 25, 2025.
This is the first extradition of a person from India to the United States since 2017.
Shenoy, 54, was arraigned on September 26, 2025, before Judge Helene Gugerty on an indictment charge of Manslaughter in the Second Degree (a Class C felony). He pleaded not guilty and was remanded. His next court date is October 14, 2025. If convicted, he faces up to five to 15 years in prison.
“After decades of evading law enforcement and dodging prosecution, my office finally returned this defendant to the United States to answer for the tragic death of a husband and father of two more than 20 years ago,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.
“Just two weeks after Ganesh Shenoy allegedly sped through a red light, rammed into 44-year-old Philip Mastropolo’s car and killed him, the defendant fled to India and never looked back,” Donnelly added. “For decades, Philip’s family has lived with the pain of his loss and the knowledge that the man responsible for his death was half a world away. But not anymore. Ganesh Shenoy will be held responsible for his alleged actions, and my office will get justice for Philip and his family.”
