A Central Islip man was arrested for drunk driving after New York State troopers stopped him for driving the wrong way on the Southern State Parkway.
On September 6 at approximately 10:51 p.m., New York State troopers received multiple reports of a wrong-way driver traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the Southern State Parkway in the area of exit 44. They quickly responded to the area, where they were able to slow down traffic driving in the correct direction while locating and stopping the vehicle driving in the wrong direction before they caused any life threatening collisions, crashes or injuries.
Troopers soon stopped the operator of a 2009 Toyota Camry, Aristides Alfredo Villatoro, was allegedly driving the wrong way on the parkway. After being interviewed by state troopers, Villatoro was allegedly found to be intoxicated with a blood alcohol content of .19%, which is more than twice the legal limit.
Villatoro was taken into custody and charged with the following: Driving While Intoxicated (an unclassified misdemeanor), Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree (a Class A misdemeanor), Aggravated DWI (an unclassified misdemeanor) and multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.
New York State Police Troop L in Farmingdale acknowledged the troopers’ swift and coordinated response, which prevented a potentially serious incident and ensured the safety of all motorists traveling on the parkway.
“The New York State Police would like to remind all drivers to remain alert, avoid distractions, do not drink and drive under any influence, and report any unsafe or hazardous driving conditions immediately,” NYSP Troop L said in a statement. “Driving is a shared responsibility and driving responsibly saves lives.”
