Town Meeting Will Address Children’s Use of Vapes

The Brookhaven Town Department of General Services Youth Bureau Division, in partnership with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD), will offer a new professional development workshop titled “Vaping-Trends, Risk Factors, and Communicating with Youth.” The workshop will take place on September 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., both virtually via Zoom and in person at Brookhaven Town Hall, located at 1 Independence Hill in Farmingville.

Funded through the Suffolk County Opioid Settlement Grant, the workshop will be presented by LICADD social workers Mary Elaine Gibbo and Adam Birkenstock. It is open to anyone interested in youth mental health and substance use prevention and provides 2.5 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for mental health professionals.

Attendees will explore best practices in:

  • Learning the most common substances used by youth
  • Risk factors associated with youth substance use
  • Warning signs, prevalence, and impact of youth substance use
  • Evidence-based strategies and resources to prevent and help youth struggling with substance use

“This workshop provides professional insight into the youth substance use landscape and also effective strategies that can be used to prevent our youth from turning to substance use,” said Town Supervisor Dan Panico.

A light breakfast will be served. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, visit http://forms.office.com/r/GuHBq2xB1s. For more information, please call the Youth Bureau at 631-451-8011.
