A Hempstead man is in custody after allegedly assaulting a nurse with a sharp object at Nassau University Medical Center.
The incident occurred on July 15 at approximately 3:00 a.m. when a 53-year-old nurse checked on a hospital bathroom being occupied for an unusually long time. Inside, she found the suspect — identified as Raul Guzman Campos, 40, of 56 Devon Road — damaging the ceiling tiles with an unknown sharp object.
When the nurse opened the door, Guzman Campos allegedly charged at her and struck her in the back, causing her to fall and hit her head. She suffered a back laceration and head trauma and was treated at the hospital for her injuries. No other injuries were reported.
Two Second Precinct officers who happened to be in the hospital on an unrelated matter heard the disturbance and quickly intervened, taking the suspect into custody without further incident.
During the arrest, officers discovered a clear plastic bag containing a brown powdery substance — believed to be heroin — in Guzman Campos’ wallet.
Campos is now facing multiple charges, including Assault in the Second Degree, Menacing in the Second Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree.
Campos will be arraigned when medically practical.
