The Baldwin community unveiled “George Tripptree Way” on June 21, honoring a retired FDNY firefighter who died from a 9/11-related illness more than two decades after his service at Ground Zero.

The street renaming ceremony, held at the corner of Parkview Place and Fairview Avenue, paid tribute to George J. Tripptree, a longtime member of FDNY Ladder 173, who responded to the World Trade Center attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Tripptree died on Sept. 23, 2022, from an illness linked to his time at the site.

“George Tripptree’s story illustrates the courage and selflessness demonstrated by the men and women who, on Sept. 11, 2001, answered the call of duty and rushed toward unimaginable danger to save lives,” said Nassau County Legislature Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Debra Mulé (D–Freeport), who attended the ceremony. “By enshrining his name in the heart of the Baldwin community, we are ensuring that the sacrifice he and hundreds of first responders made on that devastating day will never be forgotten.”
