A Levittown man has been arrested for assault and resisting arrest during a traffic stop.

On June 5 at 10:38 p.m., officers observed a white 2014 Maserati traveling southbound on Gardiners Avenue with a plate cover, which obstructed the rear license plate.  Officers activated their emergency lights and conducted a Vehicle and Traffic Law stop in the parking lot of 162 Gardiners Avenue. During the investigation, the male front passenger exited the vehicle and proceeded to walk away from officers, who were able to make contact with the visibly nervous male.

The investigation revealed that Dashawn Thompkins, 47, of 3680 Stokes Avenue, intentionally provided the officers with an incorrect name and date of birth. Further investigation revealed that Thompkins was in violation of two active orders of protection, one from the female driver and one from the male passenger. He fled on foot and after a brief foot pursuit, two officers sustained injuries during the course of the arrest as the defendant was violent and combative while resisting arrest.

Both officers were treated at a local area hospital. One officer sustained multiple rib fractures and a fractured wrist and the second officer sustained minor injuries.

Thompkins is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of first-degree criminal contempt, resisting arrest, second-degree obstructing governmental administration and false personation.  He was arraigned on June 6 at First District Court in Hempstead.
