A New Jersey woman was arrested after allegedly fleeing police, resulting in one of the officers being injured.
On May 1 at 1:50 p.m., officers observed a black 2010 Volkswagen Jetta traveling north in front of 77 Green Acres Road W in Valley Stream with an expired New York State inspection sticker, a missing front plate and an unregistered rear plate. Officers initiated a Vehicle and Traffic Law stop in the Green Acres parking lot.
The driver, Charmaine N. Norville, allegedly failed to provide her license and vehicle registration. She allegedly refused numerous times to comply with the officer’s requests and then drove away with the front driver’s side door still open. As a result, an officer was dragged by the car, resulting in multiple injuries. Norville allegedly fled the scene at a high rate of speed, committing multiple Traffic Law violations and nearly struck a pedestrian before stopping the vehicle in front of 750 Sunrise Highway.
Norville, 47, of 380 Union Avenue, Irvington, New Jersey was taken into custody without further incident. The injured officer was transported to a local hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Police charged Norville with two counts of second-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, first-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation and third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer in a motor vehicle. She was scheduled to be arraigned on May 2 at First District Court in Hempstead.
