A retired Investigator who spent over a quarter of a century with the New York State Police (NYSP) has passed away.

Thomas K. Herrick died on April 12 from an illness resulting from his assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.  His passing was recently announced by the NYSP.

“His death is a solemn reminder of the lasting toll borne by those who responded selflessly in the aftermath of that tragic day,” the NYSP said in a statement.

Herrick dedicated 26 years of honorable service to the New York State Police, retiring on August 19, 2009. He was last assigned to the Troop L Felony Warrant Squad in Farmingdale, where he served with distinction.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret “Meg” Herrick, and their three children, Thomas, Ryan, and Matthew.

On April 29, services were held at St. Martin of Tours Church in Bethpage. Later that day, Governor Kathy Hochul ordered all flags to be held at half-staff. “Investigator Herrick served New York State with distinction – making the ultimate sacrifice for his fellow New Yorkers in our greatest time of need,” Hochul said. “We are so grateful to Investigator Herrick for his contributions to keeping New York safe, and I send my deepest condolences to his family in their time of great sorrow.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Herrick family, friends, and former colleagues during this difficult time,” the NYSP added. “The New York State Police stands together in honoring Investigator Herrick’s service and sacrifice.”
