Let’s Give Workers a Break on Thanksgiving

Bravo to the many retailers who decided to close on Thanksgiving so that their employees can enjoy special holiday time with their families. https://www.newsday.com/business/stores-closed-thanksgiving-fnlh9bde

There was a time — decades ago — when the only stores open on Thanksgiving were grocery outlets for short periods of time, as well as some restaurants.

As time went by, the Black Friday sales spilled into Thanksgiving morning, and then the afternoon. After a while, Thanksgiving became just another day for a number of these retailers. There were a few exceptions, such as Long Island-based P.C. Richard & Son. But now we see a number of other big outlets closing as well on this special day. We say to them, “Bravo!”

Anyone who is going to buy a TV on Thanksgiving can just as easily buy it on Black Friday. Of course, we understand why grocery stores and emergency outlets may need to stay open, but is there really a need to shop for Christmas presents on this special holiday?

Kudos to Best Buy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Target and Walmart, and the many others who are agreeing to close this Thursday. The same goes for many of our Long Island malls, including Roosevelt Field, Green Acres, and the South Shore Mall. Let’s hope this trend continues.
