Assemblyman Ed Flood (R,C-Port Jefferson) and state Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,C-New Suffolk)  recently came to Minnesauke Elementary School in East Setauket to present an official Assembly Proclamation to Jessica Carioshia and a citation to Aidan Sterne and Susan Archer for successfully performing the Heimlich maneuver to save a life.

Sterne, a fourth-grader, noticed one of his friends was choking during lunch in the cafeteria and quickly notified Carioshia, the lunch monitor, who quickly performed the Heimlich maneuver to help the student. The student was cleared by the school nurse to return to normal activities, thanks to Cariosha’s quick response.

Each year, Archer teaches the Heimlich maneuver to students at the beginning of the school year, then again in June.

“The story of Jessica and Aidan was truly inspiring with their life-saving efforts to the student in need of assistance,” Flood said. “They are both true heroes in action! Jessica stepped up at a critical moment and saved a life by helping someone who was choking. Your quick thinking and bravery are an inspiration to us all!”

“I was pleased to join Assemblyman Ed Flood to recognize the heroic actions of Jessica Carioshia and student Aidan Sterne for coming to the assistance of a choking student and for their efforts in saving a life,” Palumbo said. “Their actions are a testament to the importance of training and observation in helping others. I commend teacher Susan Archer for her work in providing these life saving training.”
