Committee Approves Traffic Safety Projects in Hempstead, Lakeview

The Nassau County Legislature’s Rules Committee voted unanimously on September 9 to authorize an engineering and design services contract related to streetscape and traffic safety projects in the Village of Hempstead and the hamlet of Lakeview.

The streetscape and traffic safety projects will take place at Fulton Avenue from North Franklin Street to Hendrickson Avenue; Peninsula Boulevard from Fulton Avenue to the north end of the Southern State Parkway; Franklin Street from the Garden City border to the Southern State; Washington Street from the Garden City border to Peninsula Boulevard; and Clinton Avenue from the Garden City border to Peninsula Boulevard.

Later that day, the Rules committee also approved the Woodfield Road traffic safety and streetscape initiative in Lakeview by approving a contract to expand the scope of the project to include Lakeview Avenue from Ocean Avenue to Peninsula Boulevard spanning Lakeview, Lynbrook, and Rockville Centre. This and the aforementioned projects were spearheaded by Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Bynoe (D-Westbury).

As a result of these approvals, nearly $69 million was secured for traffic safety projects across the Second District in the County’s Fiscal Year 2023 Capital Plan. In Hempstead Village, this included $6.831 million for Franklin Avenue, $16.2 million for Peninsula Boulevard, and $6.5 million for Clinton Street; in Lakeview, Alternate Deputy Minority Leader Bynoe secured $6.232 million for the Woodfield Road streetscape and traffic safety initiative. To oversee these projects and the allocation of these resources, Bynoe convened the Hempstead and Lakeview Traffic Safety and Streetscape Initiatives.

“Well-maintained roads are crucial for stimulating economic activity in our downtown business districts, preserving our quality of life, and ensuring safety for all who traverse county roads in cars, on bicycles, and as pedestrians,” Bynoe, a member of the Legislature’s Rules committee, said. “I am gratified that we have taken these important steps toward embarking upon key traffic safety investments that will enhance the future prosperity of Hempstead Village and Lakeview for its residents and business owners.”
