Fortune.com has recognized The Town of North Hempstead as one of the top 20 best places to live in the United States. This prestigious ranking (15th) highlights the town’s exceptional school districts, renowned hospitals, and beautiful landscapes, all contributing to its status as a prime location for residents. In addition, North Hempstead boasts the highest Sharecare community well-being index on the list, reflecting its commitment to overall health and wellness.

This announcement comes after Nassau County was named the safest community in the nation by U.S. News & World Report.

To make their selections, Fortune evaluated over 2,000 cities, towns, suburbs, exurbs, villages, and townships, each with approximately 20,000 residents or more, across all 50 states in the U.S. This broad approach provided an array of locales that offer day-today essential resources like health care and education as well as a sense of community. The five main categories examined were: education, resources for aging adults, general wellness, financial health and livability. Special attention was paid to safety, diversity, and overall family life, i.e. the ability to raise children while caring for aging parents.

The Fortune editorial noted, “A great place to live is not one that solely supports a family in the present, but one that will serve them for the long term. With a growing portion of Americans caring for both children and aging parents, more people want to live in cities where multigenerational families can thrive. And as the retirement dream is unraveling for many older adults who don’t want to leave the workforce or can’t afford to, finding a place to live that provides a strong job market has never been more critical.”

“I’m routinely accused of being a town cheerleader, so this ranking puts me over the moon,” Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said.  “And it speaks to much more than just the hard work of our employees; it speaks to their humanity. Everyone already knows that we’re striving for more efficient services and lower taxes. But we believe those services and how they’re delivered should increase your sense of belonging. Our town board wants you to wake up and know that your neighbors are as interested in your well-being as you are in theirs. We want you to feel connected.”

Among the town’s most notable programs is Project Independence, one of New York’s first comprehensive aging initiatives sponsored by a local government. It started as an effort to help local seniors continue living in their own homes, and today has grown to provide a variety of services that help them live full, independent, and socially active lives. From televised exercise classes and a radio show to transportation services and Funday Mondays at the beach, the program has become a staple for the area’s seniors. The town also boast 46 parks that include pristine beaches, newly renovated track and field facilities, pickleball courts and pools. North Hempstead is also home to 25 museums, three world-class health providers with Northwell Health, NYU Langone, and Catholic Health, and its school districts are ranked as some of the best in both New York State and across the country.
