On August 10, Brookhaven Town Clerk Kevin LaValle visited the Swezey Avey House in Yaphank to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Yaphank Historical Society (YHS).  The YHS was founded in 1974 and their very first meeting was held at the Swezey Avey House.

The archives and offices of the YHS are housed there along with a research library and rooms for exhibits, meetings, and community programs.

The Swezey Avey House was built circa 1873 as the Van Rennsaler Swezey home. He and his brother Daniel operated the Swezey Mills on Upper Yaphank Lake near this house, which was owned by the Swezey family until it was sold in 1965 to Brookhaven Town.
