An Amityville man who has a prior felony record has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of possessing a loaded handgun.
On April 28, 2023, members of the Suffolk County Police Department executed a search warrant at a residence in Bay Shore. Upon entry, officers found Tremayne Winfield inside the home with a loaded 9-millimeter handgun with an extended magazine containing multiple rounds of ammunition.
Winfield, 39, was found guilty on June 24, 2024 after a jury trial heard before Supreme Court Justice John B. Collins of one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C felony, and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both Class D felonies. On November 15, 2024, Collins sentenced Winfield to 17 years to life in prison.
Winfield was previously convicted of multiple felony offenses in Suffolk County, including second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class C violent felony; second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, both Class D felonies, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a Class A misdemeanor.
“The sentence handed down to this defendant reflects the gravity of his offenses and our commitment to removing dangerous individuals from our streets,” said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney. “We believe this outcome will deter others and contribute to the safety of our neighborhoods in Suffolk County.”
