Common sense prevailed when a federal appeals court upheld the ability of a Long Island school district to control what flags can be posted in its classrooms.
An activist teacher in the school district had sought to fly the progressive pride flag in her classrooms.
The Connetquot School District claimed this violated their policy of only allowing only the U.S. and New York State flags in the classroom. The activist teacher responded with the lawsuit, claiming that it violated her constitutional rights.
Her argument is specious. She has a constitutional right to fly a pride flag outside her home or to wave it while walking down the street or standing on the corner. What she does not have a right to do as an employee of the school is to ignore the school’s rational policy of keeping politics and indoctrination out of the classroom.
If this activist teacher was able to post a pride flag, would another teacher be able to post an anti-abortion flag in her classroom? How about a pro-Palestinian flag?
Once you open the door to that type of political activity, there’s no end in sight.

As to the activist teacher, if she wants to make her points, run for political office, but keep your own political views to yourself in the classroom and don’t try to indoctrinate our children.
