Ban Government Employees from Wagering on Policy

Just last week, our newspaper editorialized about the danger related to people in government betting on platforms that predict world events.

Too much temptation exists for people seeking to make a quick buck by manipulating events or taking advantage of inside information on matters of national importance.

And, sure enough, a few days later, we see that a special forces soldier in the U.S. military was arrested for winning over $400,000 in online bets that President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela would be toppled.

The good news is that New York State is looking to ban its employees from playing on these markets. We think that’s a great idea and all other states and the federal government should follow suit for their employees.
