The Westbury Water District (WWD) Board of Water Commissioners officially celebrated the completion of its new headquarters and state-of-the-art water treatment facility at Wells 6 & 7A with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 17.
The ceremony was attended by federal, state, county and local elected officials, fellow Long Island water providers, engineering and construction partners, and members of the community. Several officials presented proclamations and congratulatory citations recognizing the District’s investment in protecting the community’s drinking water and its continued commitment to infrastructure improvements.
Following the ceremony, guests toured the new headquarters and treatment facility, where they observed the advanced treatment technologies firsthand and learned how the District is proactively addressing emerging contaminants while investing in infrastructure that will serve the Westbury community for generations to come.
The nearly $19 million Drexel Avenue project is a cornerstone of the Westbury Water District’s five-year, $65 million Capital Improvement Campaign, an initiative to modernize the district’s water infrastructure and meet increasingly stringent New York State and federal drinking water standards. Supported by a $7.389 million grant from the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (EFC), the project combines local investment with critical state funding, significantly reducing the financial burden on District ratepayers while advancing essential improvements throughout the water system, the district noted.
The new facility is among the most technologically advanced groundwater treatment facilities on Long Island, utilizing a comprehensive, multi-barrier treatment process that combines Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP), Packed Tower Aeration (PTA), and Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) technologies to address emerging contaminants, including 1,4-dioxane, PFAS, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
