The Town of North Hempstead and the Hillside Islamic Center of New Hyde Park have jointly announced a settlement resolving litigation concerning the Center’s application to expand its existing house of worship.
Under the terms of the agreement, the mosque’s existing building will expand to accommodate its growing number of congregants. To address community concerns, the project includes expanded on-site parking to reduce congestion on surrounding streets. The Center will also implement traffic safety measures, including the provision of a parking attendant.
Officials from the Town of North Hempstead expressed optimism about the agreement, noting that the revised plan reflects careful consideration of planning concerns and community feedback.
“This collaborative outcome allows the Center to move forward with the expansion but with thoughtful safeguards to help maintain the surrounding community’s quality of life,” said Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena. “All the parties involved have been negotiating these details for over a month with a clear commitment to both congregants and the wider community.”
The town affirmed its intention to foster open communication and cooperation between the community and the Center, with a shared focus on strengthening community ties and fostering an inclusive environment across North Hempstead. “Strong communities can only be built when neighbors look out for one another and take shared responsibility for the well-being of those around them,” DeSena said.
The Center emphasized that the organization remains committed to being an open and welcoming part of the community.
Abdul Aziziz Bhuiyan, the Center’s chairman, said: “Our congregation has been living and worshiping in our community for decades. Today’s settlement is a welcome resolution that will allow our congregation to practice our faith in the company of our friends and neighbors, Muslims and non-Muslims alike.”
