The Town of Brookhaven recently completed construction of a new one-acre recharge basin, along with full restoration of 1,000 linear feet of Hagerman Avenue from Montauk Highway to Atlantic Avenue in Patchogue, as well as the installation of 960 feet of drainage pipe and 10 new drainage structures.
The recharge basin is located at the intersection of Hagerman Avenue and Stanley Avenue in East Patchogue. Designed to collect storm runoff and allow it to naturally recharge into the groundwater, it serves as a crucial stormwater management and flood-mitigation infrastructure, according to the town.
The construction of the recharge basin cost $2.2 million which was paid for through capital funding.
“Brookhaven Town maintains more than 1,200 recharge basins — each are intended to handle up to eight inches of rain, containing it until the rainwater can percolate back into the ground,” said the town’s highway superintendent, Dan Losquadro. “The addition of this newest recharge basin on Hagerman Avenue will prevent localized flooding and filter pollutants out of the water. I am grateful to have received capital funding for this important project.”
