Suffolk County has launched a new website for its Septic Improvement Grant Program and a streamlined application system designed to make it easier for homeowners with outdated or failing cesspools to apply for state and county grant funding. Eligible property owners may receive grants up to $45,000 for the installation of advanced wastewater treatment technology.
The new online portal simplifies the process for residents by providing clear guidance on eligibility, step-by-step instructions for applying, and an easier way to submit required documents. Eligible property owners would receive grants toward the installation and use of an Innovative/Alternative (I/A) Onsite Wastewater Treatment System.
According to County officials, nearly 70% of Suffolk County homes use cesspools and septic systems, which are a major source of nitrogen pollution that impacts drinking water and fuels harmful algal blooms throughout the region’s surface waters.
I/A Systems utilize advanced treatment technology to significantly reduce nitrogen discharge before it reaches the environment.
At a minimum, to be eligible, the property must:
- be an existing residential home (single-family, two-family, or single-family with one accessory apartment)
- use a cesspool or septic system that is to be replaced under the grant programs and NOT be connected to sewers or within a proposed sewer area
- have a valid Certificate of Occupancy and current town-issued property tax bill
- be current on property taxes with no liens or foreclosure
- have a deed on file with the Suffolk County Clerk
In addition, the I/A project must be approved by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services Office of Wastewater Management.
Grant funds can be paid directly to an approved installer, or as reimbursement to the property owner. Payment is issued after the installation is complete.
The septic improvement grant program, funded by a voter-approved one-eighth-cent sales tax, together with funding by the New York State Septic System Replacement Program, helps offset the cost for homeowners who choose to upgrade their wastewater systems with modern treatment technology.
“Outdated septic systems and cesspools have led to the degradation of our waters and are a serious threat to our region’s groundwater and bays,” said County Executive Ed Romaine. “By making the Suffolk County Septic Improvement Grant Program application process easier, more homeowners will take advantage of this funding and be part of the solution for clean water.”
