The Town of Brookhaven has earned the highest possible credit ratings from both Moody’s Ratings and S&P Global Ratings, with stable outlooks from both agencies. The ratings provide independent recognition of Brookhaven’s strong financial position, conservative fiscal management and long-term approach to protecting taxpayers.
Moody’s assigned its Aaa rating to the Town’s approximately $46.4 million General Obligation (Serial) Bonds – 2026 and maintained its Aaa issuer and general obligation limited tax ratings. S&P Global Ratings assigned its ‘AAA’ long-term rating to the town’s approximately $46.4 million series 2026 general obligation (GO) serial bonds and affirmed its ‘AAA’ long-term rating on Brookhaven’s existing GO debt.
“Earning the highest possible ratings from both Moody’s and S&P is independent confirmation that the financial policies and management practices we have put in place are working,” said Supervisor Daniel J. Panico. “We have remained disciplined in our budgeting, strengthened the Town’s financial position and planned responsibly for Brookhaven’s future. These ratings allow us to finance important capital improvements at more favorable interest rates, saving taxpayers money while continuing to invest in the infrastructure and services our residents expect.”
“As Finance Liaison, I take great pride in the fact that Brookhaven has earned the highest possible bond ratings from both Moody’s and S&P Global,” said Councilwoman Jane Bonner. “The ratings demonstrate that our conservative budgeting, strong reserves and disciplined long-term financial planning are working.”
Deputy Supervisor and Councilman Neil Foley said, “Brookhaven’s financial strength reflects disciplined decision-making and a clear understanding of the challenges ahead. These ratings confirm that the town is well positioned to continue moving forward from a position of strength.”
Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig said, “These ratings demonstrate the financial stability of the Town of Brookhaven and the strength of our overall fiscal position. That solid foundation benefits every community and every resident we serve.”
“These ratings are a strong vote of confidence in the Town of Brookhaven and the way we manage taxpayer dollars,” Councilman Michael Loguercio added. “Strong finances allow us to make important investments in our communities while remaining focused on affordability.”
Councilman Neil Manzella said, “Earning the highest possible ratings from two leading independent rating agencies speaks volumes about Brookhaven’s financial position. Sound planning today gives us the stability and flexibility to meet the needs of our residents well into the future.”
“These highest possible ratings are an important measure of Brookhaven’s financial strength and stability,” Councilmember Jonathan Korenreich. “Responsible fiscal management puts us in a position to continue investing in our communities while protecting taxpayers.”
Moody’s cited Brookhaven’s stable financial operations, healthy reserve levels and strong economic profile in assigning its Aaa rating. The agency also noted the continued expansion of the town’s economic base and the stabilizing influence of major institutions such as Stony Brook University.
S&P Global Ratings cited Brookhaven’s continued positive operations, robust management framework and expanding tax base. The agency also recognized the town’s sophisticated and proactive financial policies and practices, disciplined management, positive operating results, strong revenue diversification and manageable debt burden.
Both agencies assigned stable outlooks based on Brookhaven’s strong financial position. Moody’s expects that the Town will maintain sound reserves and liquidity, while S&P’s stable outlook reflects its expectation that Brookhaven will maintain strong overall finances, supported by a strong economy and manageable fixed costs.
