Incidents Happened Just Hours Apart
A Valley Stream man was indicted for allegedly stabbing his uncle’s girlfriend and a coworker to death in two separate attacks just hours apart earlier this month.
On April 30 at approximately 9:00 p.m., Rony Yahir Alvarenga-Rivera was in his basement bedroom when he allegedly became agitated by the sound of the victim walking around upstairs in high heels. According to the investigation, the defendant confronted the victim and allegedly attacked her, stabbing the victim more than 50 times and killing her.
Alvarenga-Rivera then boarded a Long Island Railroad train to Wendy’s in Island Park where he worked with Ana Maria Del Aguila-Cordova. The investigation revealed that the defendant previously had a series of arguments with the victim while working together.
When Alvarenga-Rivera arrived at Wendy’s and found the restaurant doors locked, he allegedly waited near the dumpsters for the victim to take out the trash.
On May 1 at approximately 12:27 a.m., the Nassau County Police Department received a 911 call for a woman stabbed at a Wendy’s restaurant located on Austin Boulevard in Island Park.
When police responded to the scene, they found the victim, Del Aguila-Cordova, 42, on the ground near the dumpsters behind the restaurant having suffered more than 30 stab wounds. Del Aguila-Cordova was pronounced dead at the scene.
Later that night, at approximately 2:52 a.m., police received a 911 call from an employee inside a 7-11 convenience store in Lynbrook. Police responded and found Rony Yahir Alvarenga-Rivera with cuts on his hands and blood on his clothing.
Police responded to Alvarenga-Rivera’s home and located 32-year-old Eddy Raquel Hernandez Castillo lying near the side entrance of the home with more than 50 stab wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the victims were known to the defendant. Hernandez Castillo was the girlfriend of the defendant’s uncle and they had been living together above the defendant in the same home for the last six months.
Alvarenga-Rivera, 22, was arrested by the Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad on May 1. He was arraigned today before Judge Robert A. Schwartz on grand jury indictment charges of Murder in the First Degree and two counts of Murder in the Second Degree (all Class A-I felonies).
“Rony Yahir Alvarenga-Rivera’s anger over petty disagreements boiled over into the alleged murders of two innocent women,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “The defendant allegedly stabbed Eddy Raquel Hernandez Castillo to death because he could not stand the sound of her footsteps above his apartment as she walked around in the comfort of her own home. Then, having allegedly committed one murder, he sought out a coworker, Ana Maria Del Aguila-Cordova, waiting at the Wendy’s where they worked together until she took out the trash and he could strike. The defendant allegedly stabbed and killed the mother of two all because they did not get along at work. The sheer brutality of these deranged and unprovoked attacks has shattered two families. Our thoughts are with them as we prosecute this case.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty and was remanded. He is due back in court on July 8, 2026. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison without parole.
