A Southampton man was arrested following a boating accident that left two people with serious injuries off the waters of Sag Harbor.
On July 6, the Sag Harbor Village Police Department requested the assistance of the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in connection with a boating collision that seriously injured two passengers. Following the preliminary investigation, the New York State Police adopted the case. At approximately 10:07 p.m., Sag Harbor Village Police received a report of a boat that had struck a jetty in Sag Harbor Bay.
The investigation revealed that the operator of the vessel, later identified as Peter Mangiameli, 57, of Southampton, was operating a 2023, 35-foot Cruise Boat from Sag Harbor Bay into the harbor on July 5, when the vessel struck a stone jetty, causing significant damage. There were eight passengers aboard the vessel and two sustained injuries. After the collision, Mangiameli allegedly docked the vessel at a local dock where officers from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department responded and rendered assistance. Mangiameli allegedly left the scene while the injured passengers were receiving medical treatment.
The two passengers who sustained serious physical injuries were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Their injuries included a broken rib and fractures to the leg and vertebrae.
Mangiameli was arrested and charged with the following:
- Reckless Operation of a Vessel, Unreasonable Speed (a violation)
- Vessel Operator Fails to Report Accident, Personal Injury (a Class E Felony)
- Vessel Operator Fails to Provide ID, Personal Injury Accident (a Class B misdemeanor)
- Assault in the Third Degree, Recklessly Cause Physical Injury (a Class A misdemeanor)
- Assault in the Second Degree, Recklessly Cause Serious Physical Injury (a Class D felony)
- Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree (a Class A misdemeanor)
- Multiple violations of the NYS Navigation Law
