A police car races to the scene of an incident.

Suffolk County Police arrested a man after he allegedly tried to steal a running vehicle with two children in  the car in Brentwood today.

On June 16, a father went into Bougatfa Zero smoke shop, located at 656 Suffolk Avenue, with a 2025 Volkswagen running and his six-year-old and five-year-old children in the car, when a man, Mustafa Attia, allegedly entered the vehicle and tried to drive away.

The father saw Attia allegedly enter the vehicle and ran back to the Volkswagen along with an employee of the business and attempted to pull Attia out of the car.

Attia allegedly refused to leave the vehicle. Multiple people called 911 and Attia was still in the driver’s seat  when Third Precinct officers arrived. The officers pulled him out and arrested Attia.

Attia, 23, of Ronkonkoma, was charged with Attempted Grand Larceny, two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, and Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree.

He was transported to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for evaluation. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on a later date.
