A Huntington Station man was sentenced to 90 days in jail for a March assault of a train conductor who was collecting tickets on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR).
On March 8, Anthony Dean was on board a Huntington-Station bound LIRR train on the Port Jefferson Branch. At approximately 11:20 p.m., an LIRR conductor approached the defendant to collect his train ticket. Dean stood up and physically assaulted the LIRR conductor. The defendant punched the victim in his left cheek, causing pain, redness, and swelling to his face.
Dean subsequently exited the train at the LIRR Carle Place Station and began walking away down the platform.
The victim notified an off-duty police officer who was riding the train at the time of the incident. The off-duty officer held Dean on the platform until members of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Police Department arrived. The defendant was arrested on March 8 by MTA Police.
Dean, 40, pleaded guilty on April 9 before Judge Colin O’Donnell to Assault in the Second Degree (a Class D felony).
On May 11, Dean was sentenced today to 90 days in jail followed by five years of probation. A stay away order of protection was also issued. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office recommended a sentence of six months in jail followed by five years of probation and a stay away order of protection.
“The defendant chose to lash out at an LIRR conductor, who was simply doing his job, all because he did not want to pay for a train ticket,” said Nassau DA Anne Donnelly. “Violence against MTA workers will not be tolerated. These workers deserve to perform their duties without the fear of being targeted or attacked. Securing a jail sentence just two months after the initial assault reflects my office’s commitment to prioritizing the safety of those who keep Nassau County and beyond moving.”
