A Hempstead man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for shooting and killing a man in a Hempstead Parking lot two years ago.
On September 21, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Kane Moore, Maurice Sinclair Thomas, and a group of friends were playing cards in the rear parking lot of 134 Yale Street in Hempstead. An argument ensued between Moore and Thomas, and Moore pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot Thomas once in the left side.
Thomas was taken to NYU Langone Long Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m. The defendant fled the scene.
Moore was arrested on October 21, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan, by members of the Detroit Police Department and the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force and was extradited to Nassau County on October 31, 2024.
Kane Moore, 32, pleaded guilty on January 6, 2026, before Judge Caryn Fink on charges of Manslaughter in the First Degree (a B violent felony), and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree (a Class D violent felony). He was sentenced on June 5 to 25 years in prison.
“A disagreement ended in bloodshed when Kane Moore shot and killed Maurice Sinclair in a senseless act of violence and anger,” said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. “The safety of our communities depends on keeping guns off our streets and out of the hands of violent individuals like Moore. We continue to crack down on illegal guns with our law enforcement partners and hold dangerous criminals accountable with significant sentences like this one.”
