15-Year-Old Also Charged for Allegedly Drawing Swastika on Bathroom Wall in High School
A father and his son were arrested after Nassau County police found chemical explosives at their home in Syosset.
On April 22 at 1:35 p.m., Second Squad officers were conducting an investigation for a bias incident that occurred at Syosset High School, located at Southwoods Road. After a thorough investigation, officers determined that a 15-year-old male juvenile allegedly drew a swastika in the men’s restroom at the school. During the investigation, officers responded to the juvenile’s residence and reportedly discovered several chemicals at this location that had been combined to create explosive materials.
At this time, officers conducted an evacuation of the home and began to evacuate residents of neighboring homes. The Nassau County Fire Marshal, Arson Bomb Squad, and the Nassau County Police Emergency Service Unit (ESU) were all notified and responded to the scene. The Nassau County Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) Response Team also responded and carefully removed the hazardous material from the home.
Further investigation by detectives revealed that the juvenile’s father, Francisco Sanles, 48, on multiple occasions, allegedly paid for the purchase of the various chemicals. He was placed into custody without further incident.
Police charged Sanles with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the First Degree, two counts of Criminal Facilitation in the Fourth Degree, two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Reckless Endangerment. He is schedule to be arraigned on April 23 at First District Court in Hempstead. His son was charged with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the First Degree, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, Aggravated Harassment in the First Degree and Making Graffiti. He will be arraigned at Nassau County Family Court in Mineola.
